In 2007, we met The Sowers Group for the first time, and from the beginning we were struck by their dedication to God and their musical excellence. Our partnership began in 2008 when The Sowers wrote the majority of the songs for “Nipe Jibu,” our Swahili musical. Mike Matumaini, the head of the group, an Executive Producer for the film, spent countless hours at Pamoja recording and editing the music, and we developed a close friendship with them.
The Sowers Group started when two Congolese brothers, Mike and Oswald, along with their childhood friend Kosto, joined together at the time of the first war in Congo, with the vision of ministering to people’s lives through music. After facing death and recognizing God’s saving hand upon their lives, they sang of their experiences to minister hope. When the second war began, they were again confronted with death and left as a group for Rwanda. The time in Rwanda was a time of growth, both as a team and spiritually. Living together in the good times and bad, they continued to minister through music with a small church in Kigali. Their first album, “70 x 7,” was completed in 2002 and was a hit in Rwanda. Christelle later joined the group, and she and Mike married in 2004. Also in 2004, the group moved to Uganda. From Uganda, they moved to Tanzania. They subsequently signed with Translator Records in Australia and Kahawa Records in Tanzania. We represent them within Africa, and Translator Records, who produced their second album, “Cheza! (Dance),” represents them internationally.
The Sowers Group is one of the most dynamic bands in Africa today. Their songs represent the spirit and future of East Africa. By blending styles from Central/East Africa, sounds from their own individual tribes, Australian grooves and influences from American R&B the Sowers Group are creating unique music that carries a powerful message of hope. Coming from the war-torn countries of Congo and Rwanda this group sings about the saving power of God from experience. Everywhere they go, within Africa and around the world, they captivate audiences with their powerful lyrics and incredible stage presence. Their harmonies and beats have earned them a place in the hearts and minds of music lovers everywhere.
